Experts have identified factors, ranging from bad roads, articulated trucks, night driving, distractions, lack of planning ahead, overspeeding, influence of alcohol, fatigue to anxiety and disrespect to highway codes, among others, as factors responsible for incessant road crashes in the country, especially during the “ember months”.
These tips were identified at a training programme organised by Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and road Marshals, on Saturday, at the Wellington Hotel in Effurun, Delta State.
At a training tagged: “Arrive Alive,” the General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs Department of the oil multinational, Mr Deji Haastrup, said that the programme was aimed at imparting teachings to drivers from different sections of the society, to ensure safer driving on the roads.
With several scaring road as well as air crashes already recorded so far between September and early October this year , the timing of the programme could not have been more relevant than now, as the Area Manager of CNL, Mr Chima Nwogu, noted that the responsibility to extend the safety culture to the general public on the best driving practices, to minimise the trend as the year winds down, was uppermost in the heart of the company.
The training programme had in attendance resource persons from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Road Marshals and CNL.
Participants, mostly women, were selected from various communities around Effurun, Warri and Egbema/ Gbaramatu/kingdom.
With gory still and video pictures of past and recent road crashes within the state, beamed to the participants to warn against recklessness and carelessness on the roads, the speakers took the bewildered participants through the labyrinths of safety tips, dos and don’ts of driving, need to plan ahead of every journey, knowledge on the vehicle one is going to drive, the need to always consider other road users and attitudinal change.
