WARRI— GOVERNOR of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, yesterday, said that there were alarming security reports that certain persons plan to cause a breach of the peace before, during and after the Delta Central senatorial by-election, scheduled for October 12.
He has, therefore, warned that anyone found wanting, irrespective of political leanings, would be decisively dealt with.
Uduaghan, at a meeting with political office holders from Delta Central senatorial district and other Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, stakeholders in Government House Annex, Warri, charged the candidates for the election and their supporters to shun hostilities and play by the rules.
Also, Urhobo Progress Union, UPU, the apex socio-cultural group of the Urhobo ethnic nationality in Delta State, has urged Urhobo people to vote for the senatorial candidate of their choice in the by-election.
UPU’s message to the people was conveyed by the President-General, Major-General Patrick Aziza (rtd), when the union invited the senatorial candidates of the parties separately to a meeting, weekend.
Continuing, Uduaghan said, “I am appealing to all political parties not to breach the peace by causing insecurity during the election on Saturday. Security reports show that certain persons are planning to disturb the peace and we must not give them the opportunity to do that.
“This administration has a responsibility to ensure a peaceful election and we will do all within our power to make sure that Saturday’s election is conducted in a peaceful atmosphere.”
He charged trouble makers to steer clear of the state diring the by-election in Delta Central senatorial district, adding, “We will not shirk in our duty in this regard.”
He also condemned the mayhem unleashed by some persons recently when the PDP campaign train, including the senatorial candidate, Chief Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, visited the Ovie of Agbon, Ukori I, in Kokori, even though security men were immediately drafted to the community.
….As CPP forms coalition with DPP
Sapele — The Citizen Popular Party, CPP, Delta Central senatorial district chapter in Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area of the state, says it had formed a coalition with Democratic Peoples Party, DPP, with a view to ensuring that DPP wins in Saturday’s by-election.
CPP candidate, who was to represent the party at the by-election, Rev. Felix Ekpokpobe, had openly declared that he and his supporters will turn in their votes for the DPP candidate, Chief Ede Dafinone.
He said that his decision was based on what he described as “the good record of humanitarian service which Chief Dafinone has rendered to the people of the area through human capital development, infrastructural projects and youth empowerment.”
The CPP stalwart said: “I have come to assure the DPP and its candidate, Chief Dafinone, that DPP will win the bye-election and Chief Dafinone will, thereafter, become the next senator representing the area in the Senate.
“I am to also announce that I have decided to step down my candidacy and to assure you that instead, my teaming followers and I, will turn in our votes for DPP at the election.”
Rev Ekpokpobe said that Chief Dafinone was the most reliable, resourceful and credible personality of all the candidates jostling for the position, and urged the people of the area to support Chief Dafinone in the by-election.
Also, over 5,000 motor cycle riders popularly known as Okada, thronged the venue of DPP campaign in Sapele to pledge their support for Chief Dafinone. Their leader, Onos Obogaliemu, told Vanguard that the Okada operators came to pledge their solidarity to him, following what he described as “Dafinone’s love and empowerment of the youths of Urhobo nation in the area of free education in tertiary schools and in the area of vocational training in different trades for the less privileged people of the area.”
