Sunnewsonline.com, gathered that explosions and gunfire rocked the
volatile northern Nigerian city of Maiduguri Friday morning and was
still on as at the time of this report.
Witnesses told sunnewsonline.com that scores of suspected Boko Haram
Islamist have also attacked a military barrack in the town.
The witness who spoke on condition of anonymity said the gunmen
stormed the Fauri area of Maiduguri, a hotbed of the Boko Haram
insurgency, after crossing a river on the fringes of the city. They
opened fire onthe Giwa military barracks, sparking a fierce exchange of fire with the soldiers inside, they said.
Reports have it that the heavy shooting between men of the Joint Military Task Force and heavily armed militants have sent jitters to the residents of the town, sending panic across Maiduguri.
Residents are said to be presently scampering to safety, while students are being hurriedly picked from schools and workers are returning homes.
The streets are reported to gradually becoming desolate except the presence of the warring parties.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Meanwhile, reports from Abuja, indicate that all the service chiefs are at the moment meeting with the Minister of Defence, Aliyu Gusau over the gun battle in Maiduguri.
