Fresh fears have gripe the community of borno as the possibility of an epidemic spreading across the State due to the fact that villagers are unable to bury the large number of corpses that litter their communities. Over recent weeks, terrorist sect Boko Haram has stepped up its attacks on villages across the state and many areas are currently littered with dead bodies. Due to fears of fresh attacks, many of these villages are now deserted as local people are fearful of returning to their homes, which has resulted in bodies being left to rot out in the open. Community leaders who have fled to the state capital Maiduguri, have now raised the alarm, saying that unless something is done soon, there could be an outbreak of disease.
They added that many of their people are trapped in the mountains and hills without food or water and have not eaten for days. Lawan John, the district head of one of the wards in Gwoza Local Government Area, which was recently attacked, said that 109 people had so far been buried since the attacks started but many more bodies are still lying in the streets. He added: “Corpses still litter our communities because we don’t have access to the villages as the insurgents were still hanging around.
According to Mr John, in some of the villages, the insurgents are still moving around on motorcycles and shooting anybody who attempts to descend from the mountains. At least 1,000 people have been displaced within the last one week following the incessant attacks on communities in Gwoza Local Government Area by Boko Haram insurgents. More than 150 people were recently killed in different communities in the area with hundreds of house razed by the rampaging insurgents that stormed several villages. Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, said killings and the burning of property is continuing in some of the villages, including Gavva, Agapalagu, Chikide, Dushwale, Ngoshe and Ashigashiya.
