Governor Oshiomhole approves 27.5% allowance for teachers

The Governor of Edo State Adams Oshiomhole  has approved the payment of 27.5 percent teachers’ special allowance and implementation of other demands of the Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT) in the state.

Also, the Governor gave his official nod to the payment of the November and December, 2013 salaries of over 322 teachers in Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state.

Other approved demands of the NUT which were presented on their behalf by the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) include payment of 10 percent salary relativity increase and the consequential 27.5 percent TSA therefrom as well as payment of financial benefits of the last set of promotions approved for primary school teachers.

Liberia health workers to strike over Ebola hazard pay

Healthcare workers are defying a request by health officials to avoid industrial action during the Ebola crisis to demand hazard pay for treating patients infected with the disease.

MONROVIA: Healthcare workers in Liberia, the country hit hardest by the Ebola epidemic, will go on strike from Monday (Oct 13) to demand hazard pay for treating patients infected with the deadly disease, their union leader said.
"Beginning tomorrow we will be on a nationwide strike in every hospital and every health centre including ETUs (Ebola Treatment Units)," said Joseph Tamba, chairman of the health workers' union.

Staff at Monrovia's Island Clinic, the largest government-run Ebola clinic in the capital, have already been on a "go slow" in recent days in their battle for extra pay - defying a request by health officials to avoid industrial action during the Ebola crisis, which has killed over 4,000 people in west Africa.

Ghana To Export Electricity to Nigeria.

The Ghanaian president John Mahama, has said that there are plans by his govt to start exporting electricity from Ghana to Nigeria and other West African countries. He said this while speaking at the Global Business and Economic Forum in Dubai yesterday October 1st,

"We have given priority to electricity generation in our country. We have prioritized energy in such a way that we want to become the hub for power production in West Africa. We want to generate electricity to the point that excess power can be exported to Nigeria, Ivory Coast and other countries that have power deficit,” he said.

Cameroon Closes Borders With Nigeria, Over Ebola Scare

Speaking yesterday on a special programme of the Hausa Service of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) monitored in Maiduguri, the spokesman of Cameroon Foreign Affairs, Chiroumma Boukkari said the decision to close the borders with Nigeria has become logical due to the high rate of spreading of the virus in west Africa.

“This decision on border closure and suspension of all flights to and from Nigeria was to protect the lives of Cameroonian citizens living within and outside from contracting ebola..” he said.

“The border closures with our main trading partner will be lifted, as soon as Nigeria contains the spread of the deadly viral disease. We also urge all border security agencies of the two countries to be vigilant by complying with this border closures made yesterday (Saturday) by the foreign office here in Ngaudore,” said Boukkari.

Meriam Ibrahim Released From Jail After Being Detained At Khartoum Airport

A Sudanese woman whose death sentence for renouncing Islam was overturned has been released from jail again, after she was detained at Khartoum airport on Tuesday.
Meriam Ibrahim’s lawyer, Muhannad Mustafa, said that she is currently in the US embassy with her family. Ibrahim had been detained on charges of falsifying her travel documents.

She was first released on 23 June when an appeals court lifted her death sentence for renouncing Islam. Her sentencing in may to hanging for apostasy sparked an outcry at home and around the world.

Mosque In Bangui, 'Central African Republic' Destroyed Following Church Attack

A group of Christian youths in the Central African Republic have sacked a mosque and barricaded streets with burning tyres in the capital, Bangui.
It comes a day after Seleka militias attacked a church in Bangui with guns and grenades, killing several people.
The mostly Muslim Seleka rebels have been involved in heavy fighting with mainly Christian fighters in the anti-balaka militia since March 2013.
About a quarter of the CAR's population has been displaced by the conflict.
There have been no reports of casualties following the attack on the mosque in Bangui's Lakouanga neighbourhood. One report said that the mosque was empty at the time of the attack.
A spokesman for Bangui's Muslim community, Ousmane Abakar, told AP news agency: "For six months we have been the ones subjected to violence and the destruction of our mosques."
He also condemned Wednesday's attack on the Church of Fatima, but said local Muslims were not responsible for the assault.

This man was killed by a mob Monday in Koudougou, a town in central Burkina Faso, after being accused of making another man’s penis “disappear”. It was not an isolated incident: there has been an increase in the number of these strange accusations being made in recent weeks. This lynching took place in the 10th district of Koudougou, in the city’s west. It all started with a fight at a restaurant between two men: one accused the other of having cast a spell on him simply by touching him. The first man, a local mechanic, claimed that his penis had been "stolen” by the second man, who was not from the district. The first man called the police. But by then, a crowd had gathered around them. Incensed, the residents decided to lynch the man in the middle of the street.

Norway to Re-stage Historical ‘Human Zoo’ that Exhibits Africans Like Animals

Norway will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of its constitution next month. To commemorate the event, the country’s government is opening a “human zoo” to re-enact an  exhibition that took place in the colonial era during the 1914 Norway World Fair, where Africans were exhibited as though they were animals.

Organizers of the “human zoo” re-enactment say they have chosen to embark on the project to enable important discussions about the legacy of colonialism and racism.

However, this planned re-enactment  has sparked outrage worldwide. Many have said the exhibition is degrading and will be humiliating to Africans worldwide and may cause racial stereotyping to become even more rampant.

Women who’ve suffered clitoral mutilation – a dehumanizing practice prevalent in Africa – can now rejoice as the first centre in the world dubbed the “Pleasure Hospital” where the organ can be restored opens in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso on 7 March 2014.
According to a statement released Tuesday by U.S.-based, nonprofit organization Clitoraid, the hospital which will restore the dignity and pleasure of victims of female genital mutilation (FGM),the hospital was built with donated funds and through the efforts of worldwide volunteers and it already has a long waiting list.

South Africa’s former president Nelson Mandela has left an estate estimated at $4.1 million to be divided among his family, the ruling African National Congress, former staff and several local schools, a reading of his will revealed on Monday.  The  Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke said that Mandela’s family had accepted the terms of his will earlier on Monday.Mandela’s third wife, Graca Machel, waived her claims to the estate, Moseneke added at a news conference where he summarised parts of Mandela’s 40-page will.

Moseneke said some of the estate would be split between three trusts set up by Mandela, including a family trust designed to provide for his more than 30 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
