Discovery Of Kenyan Water Brings Hope To Parched North

The Kenyan government and UNESCO on Wednesday announced the discovery of a huge supply of underground water in the impoverished, drought-stricken extreme north of the country.
The find, made using advanced satellite exploration technology and backed up by UNESCO drilling, was hailed as a scientific breakthrough that could radically change the lives of the half-million people living in one of the world's most arid regions.

Two aquifers -- underground layers of permeable rock or silt soaked in water -- were found in the Turkana region, the scene of a devastating drought two years ago that aid workers said pushed malnutrition rates up to 37 percent.
"The news about these water reserves comes at a time when reliable water supplies are highly needed," said Judi Wakhungu, cabinet secretary in the Kenyan ministry of environment, water and natural resources.
"This newly found wealth of water opens a door to a more prosperous future for the people of Turkana and the nation as a whole. We must now work to further explore these resources responsibly and safeguard them for future generations," Wakhungu said at the start of a water security conference in Nairobi.
The firm which carried out the survey, Radar Technologies International (RTI), said the area hosts a minimum reserve of 250 billion cubic meters of water, which is recharged at a rate of 3.4 billion cubic meters per year -- almost equivalent to annual water consumption in Austria.
"Hundreds of thousands of livestock die because of recurring droughts. This won't happen anymore," RTI president Alain Gachet told AFP.
"We've just doubled the country's drinking water reserves. The needs are huge, as women often have to walk 10 to 20 kilometres to get water."
RTI said the largest find -- the Lotikipi Basin Aquifer, located west of Lake Turkana -- was roughly the size of the US state of Rhode Island.
The smaller Lodwar Basin Aquifer, meanwhile, could feed the parched regional capital of Lodwar -- although UNESCO cautioned that water quality still needed to be assessed.
The hostile and desert-like Turkana region, near the northern border with Uganda, South Sudan and Ethiopia, is the poorest in the country, and its mostly-nomadic people are among the most vulnerable in Africa.
Fighting between rival groups -- often armed with guns -- over grazing land for their livestock is common in the region.
Of Kenya's 41 million strong population, 17 million lack access to safe water, and 28 million do not have adequate sanitation.
Kenya's northern region already hosts Lake Turkana -- the world's biggest desert lake stretching 250 kilometres (150 miles) long by 60 kilometres wide at its largest point -- but the famous jade-coloured waters are threatened by hydroelectric dams cutting off feeder streams in neighbouring Ethiopia.
But water is not the only resource under the ground, with exploratory oil drilling ongoing.

Revealed: Why the Aluu 4 Students Were Killed

the whole issue is clearer as the boys "ignorantly" got themselves involved with a cultist who operates with a gun, all in a bid to get their money back from a debtor.

please note that  this story is an eyewitness account from the 5th boy who escaped. He narrated this to Ugo and Lloyd’s friend who has pleaded that his identity must  be kept secret

Below is what actually happened according to an insider....

An indigene of Aluu owed Ugo some money and had vowed not to pay back. Ugo who was popularly known as Tipsy had gone to meet with a fearless University guy (name withheld) to help them track the debtor who had been on the run.

‘Mr Fearless guy’ (a cultist) who was feared by many in the school ad accepted to accompany his friends to get the debtor tracked down in exchange for a percentage of the debt.

They were joined by their room-mate, Chidiaka. On their way to the place, they met one of their friend, Tekena, who knew nothing about the plan, and he joined, just for the hype as is normal with young boys of juvenile age.

That made 5 boys - Ugo, Lloyd, Chidiaka, Tekena and ‘Mr Fearless Guy’ that got to the debtor’s compound. Unknown to the other four, ‘Mr Fearless Guy’ who was contracted to intimidate the debtor just to get the money paid, went with a gun.

When they got to the debtor’s house around 12am, a fight ensued, as the debtor confronted them. A next door neighbour, a woman started shouting on top of her voice, that they were thieves, attracting other bad boys around the area, whom were mainly “vikings”, the rival cult group of the one on contract.

They swung into action by tipping the vigilante group who confronted the
boys, referring to them as thieves. In the process of beating the boys, while they were trying to prove their innocence, the fifth boy, ‘Mr Fearless Guy’, who is a cultist, brought out his gun to scare the people, and he escaped, leaving the rest four at the mercy of the villagers.
The explanation they tried to give fell on the community’s deaf ears as the people insisted they must be killed....and unfortunately they were lynched!

Father Of Arik Air Stowaway Teenage Boy, Speaks Out

A drama unfolded yesterday at the Edo State Government House in Benin City, when  the father of the stowaway teenage boy, Daniel Oikhena, who was said to  be bedridden due to an illness, surfaced during a meeting between Governor Adams Oshiomhole and the family.

This came as the Department of  State Services, DSS, yesterday, handed over Daniel to the Edo State  Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development but denied the mother,  Mrs. Evelyn Oikhena, access to her son.

Mr.  Osaigbovo  Oikhena, 44, a driver by profession, told journalists that  contrary to reports that he was sick and bedridden, he was living  separately from the family due to a disagreement he had with his wife.

He  said his wife refused to stay in the house where he could afford the  rent. Therefore, he decided to move out of the house a year ago to where  he could afford the rent.

He said: “I decided to come here today (yesterday) to tell the world that I am the father of Daniel.

Initially,  when I heard the news, I thought my son was kidnapped. But my wife said  I should calm down that when everything is okay, she will call me.

My wife refused to  move in with me“I  never dreamt of going to America, I am not married to another woman.

My  wife refused to give the DSS my number when they asked for it.

“Arising  from my loss of job, I decided to move to a new apartment where I can afford the rent and told my wife that they should move in with me, but  she refused and continued to stay in the three-bedroom flat on 7,  Ehigiagbe Street, Ekenwan, Benin City.”

Mr Osaigbovo who said he  resides at Siluko Road, noted: “I usually  pay my children’s school fees  and provide feeding money regularly, contrary to claims that I  abandoned my family.”

He  accused the wife of making it look as if he was dead by denying people access to him.

Meanwhile,  De RAUFS, a volunteer group which had indicated interest in the welfare  of Daniel was at Government House, Benin City. Represented by Yinka  Muyiwa, head of legal team, De RAUFS said it came to Edo State to  reaffirm the scholarship it earlier gave the lad to continue his  education up to university level.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Oikhena, the mother of Daniel, has confirmed the return of her son to Benin. She told newsmen in Benin that she got a call, yesterday, inviting her to the state Ministry of Women of Affairs.

She  said: “I went to the office and was told that my child had been taken  to DSS.  I went there and saw Daniel. They  did not allow me to touch or  greet him, but he was looking good.”

She said after a short session with DSS, she was asked to go and wait at the Ministry of Women Affairs.

Journalists and family members, including his mother, Mrs Evelyn Oikhena were however denied access to the boy at the DSS office in Benin City. Also, efforts made by Mrs. Oikhena at the Ministry of Women Affairs to see her son were rebuffed by the Ministry officials.

At the premises of the Ministry, Mrs. Oikhena lamented, “I was not allowed to see my son at the SSS office when I was told he was there. I went there but they said they have taken him to the Ministry of Women Affairs. I was given a number to call but I have been calling the number but no response. I asked some body they told me he is not here but they told me he is here. So I am waiting to hear from them. I missed my son and I want to see him,”she said.

Kwankwaso Humiliates President Jonathan At The Presidential Villa

It is no longer news that seven PDP governors walked out on the special delegates convention               of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held on Saturday 31st of August.
Things took another dimension with a mild political drama at Nigeria’s Presidential Villa on Sunday night when Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ofGovernor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso rejected the request of President Goodluck Jonathan to stand beside him as Tony Anenih,
the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the People’s Democratic Party, read a communiqué at the end of their “peace” meeting.
Mr. Kwankwaso was the spokesman of a group of PDP governors who last Saturday walked out of the venue of the party’s mini-convention.
He was at Aso Rock Villa to participate in a meeting called by Mr. Jonathan to iron out differences between the president’s faction of the party and a splinter group of governors and other party members who staged the dramatic walkout.
At the end of the peace meeting, which was attended by 16 governors, Mr. Anenih was mandated to speak with reporters as Mr. Jonathan and his deputy, Namadi Sambo, were reduced to spectators. A presidential source revealed that President Jonathan had beckoned on Kwankwaso to stand beside him, but the Kano State governor refused.
“When Mr. President beckoned to Alhaji Kwankwaso to stand by his side as Chief Anenih read out the communiqué, the governor raised his finger and shook it several times. He then headed to the side of Chief Anenih,” said the source. He added that Mr. Jonathan, though clearly miffed, flashed a pained smile.
It wass learnt that Mr. Jonathan first met behind closed doors with former President Olusegun Obasanjo for close to two hours in the private residence of the president, and then met with 16 PDP governors, including four of the group that walked away from the mini-convention. The splinter group, led by former Vice President Abubakar Atiku, subsequently met at the Musa Yar’Adua Convention Center in Abuja and announced the formation of the “New PDP.” The rebellious governors include Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa, and Abdulfatai Ahmed of Kwara State.
Mr. Anenih read the communiqué flanked by President Jonathan on the right and Governor Kwankwaso on the left, with other governors behind them. The chairman of the fractious party’s board of trustees stated that “the leadership of the party and the PDP governors met today to discuss the incident that occurred during the PDP special convention on the 31st of August 2013, whereby some state delegations walked out of the convention ground to announce a faction of the party.” He added: “The meeting was smooth and encouraging and the discussions will continue on Tuesday with all the aggrieved governors in attendance."

Man Kidnaps Self,And Demands N2million Ransom From Brothers

sam
The police in Enugu State have arrested one Samuel Ani after he allegedly “kidnapped himself” and demanded N2 million ransom from his brothers.
Samuel saw his own kidnap as the quickest way of getting financial assistance from his brothers, who he labeled “stingy fellows”.

However, it has ended up badly for the coffin dealer, an indigene of Ugwuaji, Enugu South Local Government Area.
It was gathered that he faked kidnap and hid himself for six days at a bush behind his shop situated at Gariki axis of Awkunanaw also in Enugu South, from where he was making telephone calls to his two younger brothers in a very convincing tone that he had been abducted and that the sum of N2 million was required to get him out of the purported kidnappers den, else he would be killed.
The spokesman of the police in Enugu State, Ebere Amaraizu, DSP, who confirmed the incident disclosed that the case was reported to the State Police Command, which mobilized its anti- kidnapping unit.
sam and oluchi

According to him, “when Samuel intensified his call that the purported kidnappers were on the verge of killing him if his people cannot bring the money, which was later reduced to N1.2m, some amount of money was sent across to the account number provided by the purported kidnappers and a certain girl who wentto cash the sum of initial N100, 000 sent into the account in one of the new generation banks located around Agbani road axis on 29/8/13, was tracked and picked by the operatives.
“Her revelation led to the arrest of Samuel who disclosed that he was not kidnapped but that he kidnapped himself so that his wealthy younger brothers can pay money for ransom which he will use to sort out his business dealings”
The girl was identified as one Oluchi Faith Ogbu from Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state and a fiancee to Samuel Ani.
“When interrogated, Oluchi Faith Ogbu said that the account belongs to her but was instructed by Samuel to supply the account number so that his brothers can pay the ransom via the account and that she was to cash it as soon as she receives alert of the payment and bring it to him.”
The police spokesman said Oluchi’s confession, however, led to the arrest of Samuel, who said he was not kidnapped but maintained that he kidnapped himself so that his wealthy younger brothers could pay ransom which he would use to sort out his business dealings.
He said apart from the trick he adopted, nothing would make his brothers give him any monetary assistance even though he regretted his actions.
Ani admitted that the step he took was not good in the sight of God, man or law and pleaded for forgiveness.
He said he is a father of five children but never revealed to Oluchi that he was married as he had promised to marry her.

"I Put On Make-Up And Revealing Clothes To Satisfy My Husband" Gospel Singer Temitope Alabi

Gospel Singer, Temitope Alabi can easily be seen as one of the most controversial gospel singer in the country.
It seems everywhere she goes, whispers and controversy follows. Recently, she got tongues wagging for her mode of dressing.
According to her;

“My current marketer (Galaxy) released a life performance, Amazing Grace, where City People gave me an award as The Best Gospel Singer For the Year. People started criticizing me from churches, telling me that the way I dressed in that video was inappropriate.
They even said because I now apply makeup that I would go to hell. And funny enough I have been putting on earrings since I came out with Oore Ti O Common, I have been putting on trousers to follow my husband wherever we go, except church programmes. But what about my husband, won’t I dress to satisfy him?
My husband does not complain. He actually complains whenever I put on something like (Iro and Buba).
He prefers it when I wear western clothes. He will even come back home and tell me whatever he saw ladies put on outside that he will like me to wear.
I can’t be going out shabbily dressed because I am singing gospel music” she squealed.

Nigerian Politician Rotimi Makinde Broke After Spending Millions To Wed 23 Year Old

Days after the wedding, some of his creditors have allegedly been knocking on his door asking for their payments.
This is really not a good time for the actor turned Politician, Hon. Rotimi Makinde who got married to his 23-year-old beauty queen, Oyebanke in a talk of the town celebration.

Penultimate weekend, Osun State was almost a sort of Mecca as many politicians and movie practitioners thronged the state for the wedding ceremony of House of Representatives member, Hon Rotimi Makinde and his new wife, Oyebanke.
The event took place in Ada town and for those who witnessed the wedding, guest were given five star treatments. There were assorted food and drinks served round to the invited guests. There were traces of class and style in the organisation of the event, considering that the bride is a beauty queen, who has a lot at stake and also to show to her friends and critics that she is now a wife of a federal lawmaker.
Banke, as Rotimi Makinde's wife is fondly called by her friends, is said to be 23 years old, just about the same age with her husband's first daughter. The lawmaker dumped his wife of many years shortly after getting to Abuja to make laws for Nigerians. Soon after, his relationship with the beauty queen became a public affair until they solidified it few days ago.
According to a source the Yoruba actor turned politician is now broke. The reason, as we were reliably informed, is not far-fetched.
We scooped that the wedding gulped a lot of money from Makinde's savings. Some of the things used for the ceremony, we were also told, were allegedly taken on credit. Days after the wedding, we gathered that some of his creditors have allegedly been knocking on his door asking for their payments. He's also been allegedly harassed in his home town by those he's owing and he has allegedly been told that he can't leave the town for anywhere unless he pays the debt.
We also gathered that the alleged financial trouble started for Makinde during the burial of Tinubu's mother. We were told by our source that the lawmaker allegedly went to borrow the sum of N50million from a bank and changed it into dollar notes and then allegedly begged Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State to take him to Tinubu to present him the token as contribution for his mum's burial.
This action, as our source said, reportedly took Aregbesola aback and asked Makinde why he was doing what wasn't too necessary of him to do, but the Osun lawmaker reportedly insisted. We learnt that Makinde decided to use the money to water the ground for his second term ambition.
247naijagossip.com reliably learnt that Makinde's father has many children and has allegedly not really helped them since his status as a House of Reps member.

Nelson Mandela discharged from South African hospital

Nelson Mandela has left hospital and has gone to his Johannesburg home, where he is continuing to receive intensive care, the South African presidency says on its website.
The announcement came a day after officials denied reports that the 95-year-old had already been discharged.

The statement says his condition remains critical and at times unstable.
South Africa's first democratically elected president has been in hospital since June with a lung infection.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate is revered around the world for leading the fight against white minority rule and preaching reconciliation with the white community despite being imprisoned for 27 years.
"His team of doctors are convinced that he will receive the same level of intensive care at his Houghton home that he received in Pretoria [hospital]," the statement from President Jacob Zuma's says.
It adds that Mr Mandela's home in the suburb of Houghton has been "reconfigured to allow him to receive intensive care there" and he will be treated by the same health care personnel who have been looking after him since 8 June.
If necessary, he will be readmitted to hospital, the presidency says.
Despite his various illnesses, the statement from Mr Zuma's office notes, the former president had displayed "immense grace and fortitude".
The South African government has released few details about his condition, appealing for Mr Mandela's privacy and dignity to be respected.
The source disclose that Andrew Harding, in South Africa says this is not the discharge of a man who has made a significant recovery but the transfer of a patient from an intensive care ward in a hospital to a specially built intensive care unit in his own home, presumably in line with his family's wishes.
But he notes that some people will take some encouragement from the fact that his doctors have said he was fit enough to make the 55km-journey (34 miles) and says such a decision will not have been taken lightly.
"It is a day of celebration for us, that he is finally back home with us," said his grandson Mandla Mandela.
On Saturday, sources close to Mr Mandela told the BBC and other international media that he had already returned home.
This was denied by South Africa's presidency, which handles all communications about the former leader's health.

Boko Haram fighters have killed at least 24 members of a vigilante in ambush(Nigeria)

Suspected Boko Haram fighters have killed at least 24 members of a vigilante group in north-eastern Nigeria, security officials say.

From the report reaching us, they said another 34 people are missing after the attack near
the town of Monguno in Borno state.
The officials said militants wearing army uniforms ambushed more than 100 vigilantes on Friday.

Attacks have increased recently despite a massive military deployment to areas worst affected by Islamist militants.
Nigeria's army recently said it had killed Boko Haram's leader Abubakar Shekau but this has not been confirmed.
The military has encouraged the formation of vigilante groups to help tackle the Islamists.
The militants attacked the vigilante youths on the outskirts of Monguno, about 160km (100 miles) north-east of the state capital Maiduguri, where Boko Haram was formed in 2009.
The vigilantes had originally arranged to go with the army but after some hours of waiting for the soldiers to arrive they moved in by themselves. The vigilante youths had been on a mission to capture Boko Haram militants in their camps when they were ambushed, the Sunday Tribune reports.
They were ambushed by militants who "had disguised in military uniforms with three captured patrol vehicles of the security agencies", sources told the paper.
There are fears that the death toll could rise further.
Boko Haram has waged a deadly insurgency in Nigeria since 2009, which has left several thousand dead.
In May, President Goodluck Jonathan declared an emergency in three north-eastern states, including Borno, saying the group threatened Nigeria's existence.
An offensive was launched against the group - which says it is fighting for the creation of an Islamic state in Nigeria - and the military encouraged the formation of vigilante groups to help.
But now it appears Boko Haram is taking revenge against such groups, say observers - adding weight to fears that the vigilante groups may trigger an escalation of the violence.
Last week, at least 20 vigilantes were killed in two separate attacks in Borno.

Wanted:EFCC want Stephaine Okereke arrested Over N50 million largesse donated by Akpabio

The Nigerian movie industry otherwise known as Nollywood is poised for a showdown as the Association of Nollywood Core Producers,ANCOP, has petitioned EFCC and SFU over the N50 million largesse donated by Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State to support the industry.

The association is alleging massive fraud in the disbursement of the fund. It has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) to investigate the matter.
According to a copy of the petition made available to HVP, signed by the association’s President, Comrade Alex Eyengho, the group is asking the agencies to invite the National President of the Association of Movie Producers, AMP, Zik Zulu Okafor, the National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria, DGN, Andy Amenechi; the Secretary General of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, Yakubu Abubakar and actress Stephanie Okereke- Linus Idahosa for obtaining the fund and disbursing it without the consent of the industry’s stakeholders.
Part of the petition dated August 19, 2013 and addressed jointly to the EFCC and SFU, read thus:
“On June 15, 2013, news broke out that some Nollywood stakeholders under the auspices of a non-existent ‘Guild of Nollywood Stars’ visited Governor Akpabio in his office in Uyo for the purpose of collecting the N50 million pledge to Nollywood.
“The Governor presented to the visitors a prototype post-dated (25-06- 2013) Zenith bank cheque number 00063639 with Akwa Ibom State Government as the account name, issued in favour of Guild of Nollywood Stars. “We also gathered that the Governor, in his usual generosity, gave each of the visitors N500, 000 cash. “Expectedly, the massive publicity given to the entire episode by the press generated heated debates. In fact, it polarised the industry till today.
“Suspecting fraud, ANCOP immediately raised the red flag when it queried the use of a non-existent ‘Guild of Nollywood Stars’ to access the N50 million pledge, by those who visited Governor Akpabio.
“We are demanding that you immediately commence a full-blown investigation into the alleged fraudent act over the N50 million Governor Akpabio gave to Nollywood to carry out a specific task but now domiciled in the account of one of the the over 30 associations and guilds in Nollywood…Sir, anything short of this is an invitation to anarchy in Nollywood.”

41 Year Old Woman Commits Suicide Over An iPad In Ondo State.

A 41-year-old woman, Mrs Catherine Sefunmi Urouna, has allegedly committed suicide by drinking some poisonous substance in protest of her husband's refusal to buy her an iPad device.
Her family of five was on Saturday morning thrown into mourning, even as the neighbours were shocked that a woman, who was happily married with children, could take such a nasty decision to take her own life over an iPad.
According to the source reaching us, the 41-year-old woman and mother of three, two boys and a girl, was a senior account officer at the Akure North local government council of Ondo State.
She was said to have threatened to kill herself a fortnight ago if her husband failed to get her an iPad; even as the husband had pleaded with her to be patient and asked her to use the Blackberry phone he bought for her until he could afford to buy her an iPad.
The police in Ondo State, however, said they were investigating the incident to ascertain the actual cause of her death.
