An elderly French woman is suspected of having killed her husband and cooked his heart, nose and genitals, a judicial source said on Friday, describing the crime as carried out by a “female Hannibal Lecter”.
A judicial source said the 71-year-old woman, who was arrested in the northeastern French town of Longwy on May 22, had killed her 80-year-old husband with a kitchen mortar used for grinding spices and then "cooked his heart, nose and genital organs in a pot, but we don't know if she ate them".
The source described the suspect as a “female Hannibal Lecter”, referring to the fictional cannibal in the American thriller "The Silence of the Lambs".
Her lawyer, Caroline Depretz, said the woman suffered from delusions. "Obviously it was a fit of madness," she said.
The woman is being held in a prison psychiatric unit and is due to undergo tests to determine if she can be held responsible for her actions.
