A Letter to Governor Fashola

Governor Babatunde Fashola
I have carefully observed with keen interest happenings in Lagos and wish to bring it to your notice. Perhaps, you may not be aware. Let me start with the traffic situation which has almost crippled most parts of the state. From Dopemu under bridge, Pen Cinema and Iyana Ipaja, among others, the situation is the same. Traffic is killing Lagos residents gradually. Despite the much talked about traffic law which has failed from ab initio, Lagos drivers, notorious for turning a minor hitch in traffic flow into complete deadlock by racing out of line and blocking every inch of the road, still remain unabated. Indeed, there is no better place to observe the indiscipline in Lagosians’ behaviour than on the roads. Why the heat of the enforcement of traffic law fizzled
out quickly, is something that can’t be explained. Aside from indiscipline, what Lagos needs now are bridges to ease out the gridlock. I want to draw your attention to some of the roads being constructed across the state. The poor handling of these projects especially in the rural areas is saddening.
These contractors are doing shoddy jobs that are making mockery of your regime. How come, nobody is challenging them? Majority of these roads lack good drainages and cannot last for two years because of the substandard materials used. To me, this negates the excellence posture of your regime when it started. It is equally sad that some of the newly constructed roads have started developing deep potholes before commissioning. Why should roads be awarded to contractors with rather limited capacity? Those who gave out the contracts are also guilty. Great cities are built by human beings and not spirits. Sir, the people need change of attitude. Lagos cannot attain mega city status with what is on the ground.
